Set on Funchal's waterfront in Madeira, this five-star hotel is the work of celebrated Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. Its sweeping curved design sits within roughly 15,000 m² of gardens, looking out over Funchal Bay, the marina and the open ocean.
Days here can be as lazy or as busy as you like: pool time and spa treatments in the gardens, or a short walk into the city for the seafront promenade, markets and Old Town lanes. The hotel forms part of a wider complex that also includes a congress centre and the Casino da Madeira.
Evenings are a highlight — dinner and cocktails at the hotel, waterfront restaurants nearby and live shows or gaming at the casino next door. Rooms range from garden, land and side-sea views to family rooms and suites; views and inclusions depend on the category you choose.
Pestana Casino Park stands on Rua Imperatriz Dona Amélia, on the Funchal waterfront and about a five-minute walk from the city centre. Its design is attributed to Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, working with Portuguese architect Viana de Lima, and it opened in the 1970s as Niemeyer's only work in Portugal. The hotel shares its complex with the Casino da Madeira and a congress centre, all set in private gardens above Funchal Bay.
Staying beside the casino means an evening of shows or gaming is a short stroll away, with no drive at the end of the night. By day, Madeira has plenty more to offer: hiking paths across the island, boat trips to look for whales and dolphins, and Funchal's markets, gardens and Old Town. The island's mild climate also means you can plan a visit in any season.
Pestana Casino Park shares its resort complex with Casino da Madeira, which means a night of gaming, dinner and entertainment is never more than a short stroll away.
The casino matches the hotel's bold architecture and offers both classic table games and electronic gaming, with shows and themed nights on selected dates.
The casino operates separately from the hotel. Entry rules, ID checks and a minimum age apply — confirm with the venue before your visit.

The Casino da Madeira is part of a complex based on an original idea by Oscar Niemeyer and sits on Avenida do Infante, right beside the hotel. Alongside the gaming room, it has two restaurants, three bars, a nightclub, a multifunctional space and a congress centre with an auditorium. Visitor services include a cloakroom, an ATM, a taxi rank and free Wi-Fi.
Evenings here tend to mix dinner, live music and a visit next door, where the casino hosts live shows and has a nightclub as well as its gaming room. The casino opens in the afternoon and runs into the early hours, closing later on Fridays, Saturdays and holiday eves, and it is closed on 24 and 25 December. Days are slower, with time by the pools, in the spa or on foot in central Funchal.
Entry to the Casino da Madeira is for adults aged 18 and over, and you may be asked to show a valid identification document. You will also need the Welcome Card, a free loyalty card used to enter and leave the casino. Beach sandals, flip-flops, espadrilles, crocs, tracksuits and sportswear are not allowed, so dress a little smarter for the evening. Rules can change, so check the casino's current access conditions before you go.
Swim in the outdoor pool above the gardens and sea, or head indoors to the heated pool, sauna, Turkish bath and gym. Some treatments need booking and may cost extra.
Restaurants and bars around the property cover everything from a slow breakfast to sundowners with views across the bay.
Walk to the marina, the seafront and the city centre, then on to the Old Town, the farmers' market and Madeira's famous gardens.
The outdoor infinity pool looks out over the Atlantic and includes a children's pool, while a rooftop pool is reserved for guests aged 16 and over. Indoors you will find a heated pool with water jets, a jacuzzi, Turkish bath, sauna and gym. The Magic SPA offers a menu of massages and treatments that you can book during your stay.
Panorâmico, set in a light-filled glass and iron dining room, serves breakfast and daily themed buffets with views of the sea. Dockside has a terrace over the marina for lunch and drinks through the day, while ON serves Portuguese and international dishes from late afternoon beside the pool. The Sunset bar and live music round off the evening, and the casino adds its own restaurants and bars.

Madeira's climate is mild all year, so there is no bad season for a stay. Spring and early autumn bring pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds, summer is ideal for the outdoor pools, and the end of the year is especially sought after for the fireworks over Funchal Bay. If you would like to see the Flower Festival in April or May or the Atlantic Festival fireworks in June, plan your dates around them and book ahead.
Couples can make the most of the rooftop pool, kept for guests aged 16 and over, along with spa treatments and dinners looking over the bay. Families have Family Rooms, a children's pool and a multifunction court for tennis, football and basketball. For larger groups, the complex offers 14 meeting rooms and a congress centre, and the gardens and pool area can host weddings and parties.
It suits travellers who want an ocean-view base within walking distance of central Funchal, with pools, a spa and the casino all in one complex. Fans of modern architecture will also enjoy staying in a Niemeyer building surrounded by gardens. If you plan to visit the casino, remember that entry is for adults only, and please gamble responsibly and set limits before you play.
